Vishay – New high-speed IR emitters reduce component count and solution cost

Vishay has introduced a new high-speed 940 nm infrared (IR) high-speed emitter in lead and SMD packages based on proprietary SurfLight surface emitter chip technology. The device provides five times the radiation intensity of a standard IR transmitter, reducing component count, improving performance, and reducing the cost of solutions in a variety of infrared lighting, data transmission, and gesture recognition applications. The devices released today include a 5mm leaded infrared emitter with parabolic lens and 8 SMD devices with 0805, PLCC-2, top and side packages. Unlike standard IR emitters, which emit light in all directions, Vishay's SurfLight devices emit almost all light and power from the top of the chip. By focusing most of the light on the surface, a higher intensity can be achieved-the light intensity of leaded emitters is as high as 600mW / sr, while the intensity of SMD equipment is from 10mW / sr to 120mW / sr. The SurfLight transmitter combines its high brightness with a narrow angle of ± 3 degrees half-angle for leaded devices and a ± 9 to ± 60 degrees half-angle for SMD devices. With a wavelength of 940 nm and a narrow spectral bandwidth, these transmitters guarantee invisible infrared radiation from CMOS cameras in CCTV and night vision systems, games, smoke detectors, light curtains, proximity sensors and IR touch screens. For automotive applications, the SMD VSMY1940X01 and VSMY3940X01 are AEC-Q101 certified. The IR transmitter has a fast rise and fall time of 10ns, a low forward voltage as low as 1.32V at 20mA, and a radiated power of 55mW. The top appearance device matches Vishay's VEMD2000X01 and VEMD2503X01 series detectors, while the side appearance device matches VEMD2xx3SLX01 and VEMT2xx3SLX01. IR transmitter supports lead-free (Pb) reflow soldering, suitable for high pulse current operation, floor life is up to four weeks, and meets J-STD-020 humidity sensitivity levels of 2a and 3, the company.
