Vishay Intertechnology, Inc. announced the launch of two new ceramic/quartz substrate UVC (short wavelength ultraviolet) light emitting diodes - VLMU35CR40-275-120 and VLMU35CR41-275-120, for sterilization in medical, industrial and consumer electronics applications. Vishay Semiconductors VLMU35CR40-275-120 and VLMU35CR41-275-120 provide higher light intensity than previous generation solutions while reducing cost, while being suitable for efficient disinfection and longer life.

The recently released device has a typical illuminating power of 37 mW at 250 mA, a mW/$ price/performance ratio of 30 % higher than that of low-power LEDs and 12 times better than previous generation solutions. In addition, the VLMU35CR41-275-120 has a minimum light power of 30 mW at 250 mA, which is comparable to the light intensity of a close competitor device at 350 mA.

Light-emitting diode wavelength range 265 nm to 280 nm, typical wavelength 274 nm, not only suitable for direct disinfection of surfaces, air and still water, but also 20% higher disinfection efficiency compared to 280nm solutions . The device is packaged in a small thermally efficient 3.45 mm x 3.45 mm x 1.7 mm surface mount package with a ceramic substrate and quartz window, 250 mA, and up to 27,000 hours at 25 C.

VLMU35CR40-275-120 and VLMU35CR41-275-120 are based on AlGaN technology and are specially designed to replace low-voltage UVC mercury lamps, especially suitable for small and compact device design. Typical end products include earplugs, toothbrushes, water bottles, refrigerators, air purifiers, door handles, medical devices, coffee machines, ATMs, toilet seats, vacuum cleaners, and various other disinfection devices. The device features a DC forward current of 300 mA, a forward voltage as low as 5.2 V, and an emission angle of ± 60°. The VLMU35CR40-275-120 and VLMU35CR41-275-120 are RoHS and Vishay Green compliant, halogen-free, suitable for reflow soldering, and have a moisture sensitivity level of J-STD-020 standard 3.
