Texas Instruments' (TI) TPS2474x series integrates ORing and hot-swap controllers and is suitable for 2.5V to 18V systems. These devices provide accurate and programmable protection settings that can help design high-power, high-availability systems that are critical for isolating faults. Programmable current limit, fast shutdown and fault timer and other functions can protect the load and power supply under fault conditions such as thermal short circuit. The quick shutdown threshold and response time can be fine-tuned to ensure quick response to actual faults, while avoiding false alarms that cause false hops. The programmable safe operating area (SOA) protection and surge timer keep the MOSFET safe under all operating conditions. After confirming that the power supply is good, the TPS2474x controller will run a fault timer when an overcurrent event occurs, but it will not limit the current. They close after the failure timer expires. Two independent timers (surge and fault timers) allow users to customize protection according to system requirements, and the O-ring function of TPS2474x allows users to program reverse voltage threshold and response time. This helps the design of redundant power systems. Typical applications include enterprise storage, hybrid power supplies, redundant power supplies, and battery systems.
