Single-Stage Flyback Controller Optimizes Cost-Effective Smart LED Drivers

Technology Cover
Date de Parution: 2022-02-20, Infineon Technologies

Infineon technologies is committed to addressing the needs of LED driver manufacturers for low-cost dimmable and intelligent LED systems. The IC has unique capabilities to meet the performance requirements required for LED lighting applications such as LED drivers and lamps up to 125W, smart lighting and emergency lighting. Outside this market area, adapters and chargers from the ICL88xx family, flat-screen TVS, all-in-ones and monitors with gains up to 125W.

All three solutions provide benchmark performance for PFC and total harmonic distortion at full load and low load conditions, facilitating platform designs and window drivers. They are optimized for SSR CV output flyback controllers and are also suitable for PSR. In order to achieve optimal efficiency and low EMI without affecting light quality, they use CCM and QRM with intelligent valley jumping function.

The device requires a minimum number of external components compared to existing solutions to achieve superior cost effectiveness. The gate drive current allows the design of up to 125W of state-of-the-art MOSFEts. The performance and efficiency of the system can be optimized to further utilize the company's CoolMOS P7 power MOSFET. In addition, the series provides external start circuit control signals for greater flexibility and a cost-optimized bottom-up platform design for a variety of applications. It provides a comprehensive set of protection features, including power limiting and secondary side overvoltage protection.

The ICL8800 is a basic variant that provides all of the above features. The ICL8810 is an advanced alternative that integrates burst mode to reduce standby power consumption to less than 100mW and flicker depth-free dimming down to 0.1%. This feature makes it suitable for smart lighting applications connected to microcontrollers. Finally, the ICL8820 is a full-featured version, further equipped with integrated DC input jitter. The latter improves emi performance and supports emi requirements for DC operations. It simplifies EMI certification without additional circuitry and minimizes cost and effort when creating emergency lighting LED driver applications.
