The L78L series three-end voltage regulator uses internal current limiting and thermal closing, making it essentially indestructible. If sufficient radiators are provided, they can provide up to 100 mA of output current. They are widely used in fixed voltage regulators, including local or on-card regulation, to eliminate noise and distribution problems associated with single point regulation.

In addition, they can be used with power channel elements to make high current voltage regulators. The L78L series offers improvements as an alternative to the Zener diode/resistor combination, while reducing static current and low noise.
