Nexperia offers two bidirectional ESD protection diodes with extremely low clamp and capacitance PESD5V0R1BxSF. These devices are based on their TrEOS technology with active SCR rectification to ensure optimal signal integrity for USB4TM (up to 2 x 20Gbps) data lines on laptops and peripherals, smartphones and other portable electronic devices.

"Due to tight budgets for insertion losses and return losses on USB4 ultra-fast lines, Nexperia supports design engineers by providing equipment that minimizes the impact of ESD protection on their overall budget," said Stefan Seider, Senior Product Manager at Nexperia. "By offering these two device options, engineers can strike a balance between ESD voltage clamp (i.e. protection level) and RF performance."

The PESD5V0R1BDSF is optimized for low clamping and provides a very low insertion loss factor of 0.28dB at 10GHz and an equally low return loss factor of -19dB at 10GHz. On the other hand, PESD5V0R1BCSF is optimized for RF performance, with insertion loss data of -0.25dB and return loss data of -19.4dB at 10GHz. This makes it ideal for applications where budgets for insertion loss and return loss are further limited.

Both devices are included in the ultra-low inductance DSN0603-2 (SOD962-2) lead-free package with a standard 0.6mm x 0.3mm footprint and 0.3mm profile with optimized backflow loss solder pads. For USB4, which is mandatory, there are also ac coupling capacitors to receive (Rx) input. Rated voltage VRWM (& GT; 2.8V) enables them to be placed immediately behind the connector, which is the best place to incorporate these capacitors into protection and provide the best system-level ESD performance. This voltage level makes them backwardly compatible with all standards connected on USB Type-C. Along with USB4, this includes USB3.2, the old USB3. X, as well as Thunderbolt and HDMI2.1(in HDMI Alt mode) data cables, HDMI2.1 supports data rates up to 48Gbps (4 x 12) and Thunderbolt up to 40Gbps (2 x 20). At the same time, TrEOS technology provides a very low ESD voltage clamp to protect sensitive transceiver modules.
