Precision current measurement sensors for test and measurement applications

Technology Cover
Date de Parution: 2021-12-18, LEM USA Inc.

LEM delivers record accuracy in current sensing by transmitting the IN200 current measurement sensor.

It is well suited for demanding applications and is considered the most accurate sensor of its kind on the market. Such as high-precision test and measurement equipment used to analyze the efficiency of hybrid and electric vehicle inverters. Using a new type of digital technology, the device can provide significant performance improvements -- particularly in terms of linearity, offset and noise immunity -- over traditional fluxgate sensors.

While the device's data sheets quote 0.6 PPM and a maximum of 10ppm, internal tests have shown that the sensor can achieve linearity below 0.5 PPM and offset of +/-5ppm. Unmatched levels of accuracy are achieved in both linear and electrical migration. By comparison, competing sensors offer +/-20-25 PPM.

In fact, three products can match the nominal current of 100A, 200A and 400A. The device complements the company's IN series of high-precision sensors with current ranges from 100A to 2000A.

One of the most notable factors that sets the product apart from its competitors is the company's shift from relying on analog circuits to digital integration technology.

"The trend is very clear," says Horst Bezold, founder of Signaltec. "The increased electrification of transportation has put tremendous pressure on inverter test platforms in the automotive industry and created a surge in demand for T&M equipment. LEM has come up with a market-leading solution that will help alleviate these pressures. By eliminating the traditional reliance on simulation, it is possible to achieve a level of accuracy that no one in the market has ever been able to achieve. This is good news for the T&M industry."

The device offers the user a number of other benefits, including significant noise reduction and excellent immunity to external fields. The device's digital technology provides immunity to temperature effects, disturbances, and power supply voltage changes. At the same time, the top-of-the-line metal housing improves EMC immunity, reduces temperature drift, and allows high-precision operation over an extended temperature range (-40C to +85C). Other features include wide frequency bandwidths -- DC to 1.1mhz (-3dB) -- a compact design with 28mm cable and bus aperture, and a status signal indicating sensor status.
