Pasternack has launched a new wideband logarithmic video amplifier product line that covers multi-octave bandwidths from 0.5GHz to 18GHz. Five upcoming models include four continuous detection logarithmic video amplifiers (SDLVA) and one detector logarithmic video amplifier (DLVA), which provide wide input dynamic range, high signal sensitivity, fast recovery time, and high temperature stability. Logarithmic amplifiers are used in applications where fast and accurate tracking of the entire frequency band is required to measure signals that vary widely at high frequencies. Signals with high-density pulses, narrow pulse widths, and large variations are compressed into an output video voltage response that increases linearly with input power. Common applications of these RF amplifiers are in radar and electronic warfare systems for direction finding and power monitoring, but they can also find use in laboratory measurement and test equipment and telecommunications and data communications systems. Pasternack's new logarithmic video amplifier uses GaAs semiconductor technology, which is very useful for high-speed applications while maintaining flatness and accuracy across the entire required frequency band. These log amplifiers can handle dynamic ranges up to 75dB and have log linearity in the range of 1 to 2.5dBm. The log slope ranges from 20 to 50 mV / dB and also has a fast recovery time of 40 to 150 nanoseconds. 50 ohm hybrid circuit components are packaged in a rugged metal package with SMA connectors. They are highly reliable and designed to meet the MIL-STD-202F environmental conditions. "Processing complex RF and microwave signal responses and measuring results can be very challenging. The choice of logarithmic video amplifiers that cover multi-octave microwave bands can support the processing and tracking of signals that require a wide range of changes to precise, accurate availability. Applications, "said Tim Galla, Pasternack's active RF component product manager.
