ON Semiconductor Introduces Industry's First KNX and Power over Ethernet (PoE) Solutions to Accelerate Building Automation

On June 8, onsemi, a leader in intelligent power and intelligent sensing technology, launched two complete system solutions that support the most widely used building automation network protocols - Power over Ethernet (PoE) and KNX.

The NCN5140S simplifies the development of access control and control panels and is the industry's first KNX Association-certified System-in-Package (SiP). The NCN5140S integrates all critical and certifiable components of a KNX device in a single package, including a digital KNX transceiver, a 32-bit Arm® Cortex®-M0+ microcontroller with a pre-certified software stack, and a system power supply DC- DC converter. The high level of integration of the NCN5140S greatly reduces material costs, allowing manufacturers to develop very thin and modern designs (<5 mm overall thickness).

ON Semiconductor also launched a complete interconnected lighting solution NCL31010 powered by Ethernet. This device is unique and nothing else on the market can compare to it. It integrates a smart LED driver and PoE interface into a single package, supporting the lighting and power requirements of a fully connected and managed lighting system.

Michel De Mey, Vice President of ON Semiconductor's Industrial Solutions Division, said: "As building automation installations gain momentum, the industry requires solutions that integrate the necessary functions in a simple, small package. ON Semiconductor introduces the pre-certified KNX SiP and new The smart LED driver provides manufacturers with the latest technology and a first-mover advantage, enabling them to develop complex, large-scale automated systems in less time."

KNX products must demonstrate compliance with supported protocols and profiles through the association's certification program to ensure seamless connectivity. Because the NCN5140S platform is pre-certified, products based on this device inherit this compliance and do not require KNX certification testing. All that is required is a declaration of modification of the KNX product, saving the time and engineering labor of a complete certification process.

The IEEE 802.3bt compliant NCL31010 can deliver over 90 watts of power via PoE. An innovative application of this device is visible light communication (VLC), made possible by a high-efficiency step-down LED driver. This involves modulating data that is imperceptible to the human eye directly onto LED lights, enabling it to broadcast data and act as a location beacon for indoor positioning systems.
