Microsemi - New 1kW surface-mount single-channel TVS diodes for aircraft applications

Technology Cover
Date de Parution: 2016-05-03, Microsemi Corporation
Microsemi has introduced a series of patented Powermite1 MUPT transient voltage suppression (TVS) diode products. New immigrants cater to market trends for electrified aircraft, higher reliability and more fuel efficient, all of which are on the rise. As a result, this drives the need for increasingly powerful, lighter, and smaller TVS solutions that provide excellent protection against transient overvoltages. Microsemi's new TVS diodes are highly compact 1,000W surface-mount single-channel devices with excellent thermal and power handling capabilities and higher reliability features in avionics applications such as engine control units and actuator control , Power distribution, environmental control, communication and instrumentation systems. Other applications include rugged handheld radios, GPS, communications test equipment, industrial logging equipment, power supplies, and circuit protection for marine and aircraft electrical systems. As aircraft electrification continues to increase, our new equipment is well-suited to capitalize on this market growth. From a global demand perspective, we estimate that the overall market for protection equipment may reach $ 1 billion by 2018. Christophe Warin, senior director of strategic marketing for Microsemi's Power Discrete and Modules Group, said. "As a leader in high-reliability solutions, Microsemi continues to execute a series of innovative product developments to support the industry's stringent and evolving needs. " The company's TVS diodes provide avalanche breakdown within a few nanoseconds of an impact, clamping transient voltages and routing their currents to the ground, providing critical protection for aircraft and other electrical systems. The new Powermite1 MUPT series also features an oxide passivation chip with high temperature solder joints, which provides high surge capability and negligible electrical performance under repeated surge conditions. Both unidirectional and bidirectional configurations are available. Compared with the two-pin devices in the traditional surface mount assembly (SMA) package, the Powermite package size of the new device is less than 1mm high and less than 2mm square, which has reduced the size by a third. Compared to similarly sized SOT-23 devices, Powermite has excellent heat dissipation and power handling capabilities. In addition to its size advantages, the Powermite package also includes an all-metal bottom (anode) side, which eliminates the possibility of flux residue during assembly, and the unique locking sheet design can be used as an integrated heat sink. Its innovative design makes the device fully compatible with automatic insertion devices. The Powermite1 MUPT series is 100% surge tested and can be tested in various "screened" versions (M, MA, MXL and MX) that have been subjected to additional screening tests (similar to those used in the JANTX military grade) Equipment testing) to improve reliability. The device offers a voltage range of 5V to 48V and is compliant with moisture classification level 1 and does not require dry packaging according to IPC / JEDEC J-STD-020B. The device can withstand 10 / 1,000 microsecond pulses, with a peak pulse power rating of 150W at 10 / 1,000 microseconds. The 1,000W rating is suitable for 8 / 20us microsecond pulses.
