To eliminate traditional design complexity in this area, Microchip Technology has released a new SOM with a SAMA5D2 MPU. The ATSAMA5D27-SOM1 contains the newly released ATSAMA5D27C-D1G-CU SiP, which simplifies design by combining non-volatile boot memory, power management, Ethernet PHY and high-speed DDR2 memory on a small single-sided PCB.
Regardless of the level of expertise, this series of products provides a very flexible design experience. Customers can solder the SOM to the board and put it into production, or use it as a reference design and free schematics, designs and Gerber files, and a complete bill of materials available online. Customers can also transition from SOM to SiP or MPU itself according to their design requirements.
The ARM® Cortex®-A5-based SAMA5D2 SiP installed on the SOM PCB or provided separately integrates 1 Gb DDR2 memory, which further simplifies the design by eliminating the high-speed memory interface restrictions on the PCB. The impedance matching is done in the package, rather than manually during development, so the system will operate normally under normal and low speed operation. The SAMA5D2 SIP offers three DDR2 memory sizes (128 Mb, 512 Mb, and 1 Gb) and is optimized for bare metal, real-time operating system (RTOS), and Linux implementations.
