Maxim Integrated introduces the dual channel buffer

Technology Cover
Date de Parution: 2023-03-08, Maxim Integrated

The MAX4951BE dual-channel buffer is ideal for re-driving serial ATA (SATA) I, SATA II, and SATA III signals, and has high electrostatic discharge (ESD) Q8kV Mannequin (HBM) protection. The MAX4951BE can be placed almost anywhere on the motherboard to overcome motherboard loss and produce esata compatible signal levels.

Functional Diagram

The device complies with SATA specification v.2.6(gold standard) while overcoming the loss of PCB and eSATA connectors. The MAX4951BE has very low standby current and is suitable for power sensitive applications. The device has the function of hardware sata drive cable detection to maintain low power consumption in standby state. The device also has a separate channel, dynamic power-off mode, which reduces power consumption when there is no input signal.

Pin Configuration

The MAX4951BE maintains signal integrity at the receiver by re-establishing the full output level and reduces total system jitter (TJ) by providing input equalization. The device has channel independent digital pre-emphasis control to drive SATA output for longer trace lengths or to meet the eSATA specification. SATA out-of-band (OOB) signaling is supported by the use of high-speed OOB signal detection at the input and suppression at the corresponding output.

Both input and output terminate internally at 50I and must be ac coupled to the SATA controller IC and SATA device. The MAX4951BE is powered by a single +3.3V(typical) power supply and can flow through traces in a small, 4mm x 4mm TQFN package for easy layout. The operating temperature range of the equipment is 0NC to +70NC.
