High-efficiency quasi-resonant PFC integrated circuits with GaN switches

Power Integrations has introduced the HiperPFS-5 series OF PFC ics that integrate 750 V PowiGaN gallium nitride switches. The IC is suitable for high power USB PD adapters, TVS, game consoles, all-in-ones and home appliances. The new integrated circuit has an efficiency of 98.3% and provides a power factor of up to 240W without heat sink, which is better than 0.98.

"As Oems and aftermarket vendors race to create the fastest, smallest and most versatile USB PD chargers for mobile devices, the HiperPFS-5 integrated circuit offers engineers a key advantage," said Edward Ong, Senior Product Marketing Manager, Power Integrations. We combine our patented PowiGaN switch with a quasi resonant, variable frequency discontinuous mode Boost PFC topology. By combining the HiperPFS-5 IC with our new HiperLCS2 chipset or our InnoSwitch™4-CZ Active clamp flyback IC, designers can easily beat even the most aggressive efficiency regulations while cutting material costs in half and achieving the extremely attractive form factor for ultra-fast chargers. "

The device's innovative QR DCM control technology changes the switching frequency based on the output load, input line voltage, and input line cycle. QR DCM controls ensure low switching losses and support the use of low-cost boost diodes. Compared with the traditional CRM boost PFC circuit, the inverter engine reduces the boost inductor size by more than 50%. Low switching and conduction losses -- further enhanced by PowiGaN switches -- coupled with lossless power-consuming influenza should mean that these ics provide high efficiency over the entire load range, with efficiency up to 98.3%.

These ics provide more than 0.98 PF at full load. The innovative PFE compensates the input filter capacitance under light loads and maintains a high PF of 0.96 even under 20% loads. The no-load power consumption is only 38mW.

The powerful 750V PowiGaN switch offers other benefits as well. In many parts of the world, mains can be unstable, often resulting in overvoltage failures of power components. The integrated circuit maintains a high power factor of up to 305VAC and can operate continuously during linear expansion up to 460VAC. In addition, it integrates the company's Automatic X Capacitor discharge (CAPZero) feature, including the redundant pins required to meet safety regulations and high voltage self-start -- all in a low-profile INSOP-T28F SMD power pack. The exposed cooling pad provided in the package is a potential source for effective cooling and simplified EMI solutions.

Digital line peak voltage detection guarantees strong performance even in the presence of uninterruptible power or generator distortion inputs.
