New Yorker Electronics now offers a new line of microcontrollers for Orion fans, IP68 rated reversible airflow fans. Fan speed and airflow direction controls can now provide a fan without adding extra wires or circuits. And by controlling fan speed using a PWM signal, these fans provide a solution to challenging cooling needs.

This arrangement increases the cost of the BOM, requires more design area to accommodate two fans, increases maintenance requirements, and reduces product reliability. Previously, if a designer wanted to achieve two airflow directions, two fans were required.

David Luna Marketing A fan of VP Orion says "Utilizing the latest microcontroller-based designs for reversible flow fans, we offer engineers the advantages of both directional flow and speed control in one fan, a function that we've been receiving more and more requests for,"

In a typical fan speed control, PWM control gives the fan a fixed frequency AC square wave signal and changes the duty cycle of the waveform to match the desired speed. Reversible fans extend this control paradigm by subdividing the PWM duty cycle curve into "forward" and "reverse" regions.

This segment still provides a speed control that compresses the duty cycle range, while allowing control of the flow direction that does not require further control of wires or circuits. A simple firmware or software change assists directional control in a customer's device with minimal disruption to industry standard control assumptions.the fans are currently available in 120mm and 172mm packages and are available in 12V, 24V, 48V and 60V versions.
