Compression software makes ECU firmware updates faster

ESOL has licensed SEGGER's emCompress compression software to provide automotive customers with faster electronic Control Unit (ECU) firmware updates.

Designed for embedded systems, the software is an excellent product choice for compressing and decompressing data even on the smallest microcontrollers. Significantly reduce update times by providing solutions to compress data for a variety of applications where size matters. In the automotive industry, CAN and other slow bus systems are a universal standard. To meet the speed limits imposed by the communication bus, the most appropriate option is to reduce the amount of data to be transferred. Because the information in firmware updates needs to remain intact, compression is the logical choice.

The decompression algorithm also supports files generated by PC-based tools, such as "7-Zip" or "Lzip," which also use LZMA. The software supports the Lepel-Ziv-Markov chain algorithm (LZMA) to generate lossless data compression and other algorithms (e.g., LZMA2). Typical compression rates for firmware images range from 2 to 4, reducing update times by 50% to 75%.

Bob N. Ueyama, Executive vice President of eSOL Said:"Thanks to the most efficient implementation of state-of-the-art compression algorithms in SEGGER's emCompress, we can significantly speed up ECU firmware updates to the delight of our customers. The time spent updating firmware in the garage can now be reduced to an absolute minimum."

SEGGER CEO Ivo Geilenbruegge explains, "While the firmware of the car ECU becomes more comprehensive with each generation of cars, updates in the garage still often use existing CAN bus tools." "We are very pleased that our emCompress is a key component of eSOL that can significantly reduce their update time."
