Compact Bluetooth LE and Wi-Fi modules for demanding customer applications

Technology Cover
Date de Parution: 2022-05-21, U-Blox America Inc.

One module targets applications in harsh industrial environments where reliable RF performance and small size are critical, as well as medical devices, smart city solutions and warehouse and retail applications. NORA-W10 Wi-Fi-4 and Bluetooth Low Energy 5.0 module released by u-blox.

The compact module is built on the Espressif ES32-S3 chipset, which includes a powerful dual-core MCU with AI hardware acceleration, enabling voice and face recognition applications at the edge. It provides a variety of hardware interfaces, including USB, CAN, SDIO, display and camera interfaces. And the device is the successor to the NINA-W10 module, adding key features including Wi-Fi-4 and Bluetooth LE 5.0, improved RF performance, built-in large-capacity flash memory and low power consumption.

Introduces single-band 2.4GHz Wi-Fi 4 (802.11b/g/n) for the low-end Wi-Fi market segment that does not require the higher performance of high-end Wi-Fi 5 and Wi-Fi 6 modules. With robust Wi-Fi connectivity in the field and data rates sufficient for numerous industrial applications, Wi-Fi-4 is expected to be the most widely used Wi-Fi technology for IoT applications until at least 2025, and for the foreseeable future maintain this level.

Bluetooth mesh support further extends the achievable coverage by forwarding messages between nodes until they reach their intended destination. Even when communicating over Wi-Fi, it can transmit data concurrently via Bluetooth Low Energy 5.0, which offers data rates of up to 2Mbps, or use Bluetooth Long Range, which can increase signal travel distances up to four times that of standard Bluetooth LE.

The NORA-W10's vast feature set makes it a strong contender for demanding applications requiring Wi-Fi 4 and Bluetooth LE 5.0 in a wide range of markets. We are excited to see how product developers can take advantage of the ES32-S3's dual-core MCU, combined with the high RF performance brought about by our careful module design," said Magnus Johansson, u-blox's short-range radio product strategy.

Many of the features of this module stem from its design. Comes with a PCB tracking antenna or antenna pin and provides superior RF performance over comparable solutions on the market. Pin/pad compatibility across the NORA module family allows product developers to address multiple market segments using the same PCB design. Dimensions are 10.4mm x 14.3mm x 1.8mm,And the module's AI capabilities make it ideal for edge-hosted face and voice recognition used in digital assistance, smart home and smart office solutions.
