Atmel announced the first wearable solution to integrate its broad product portfolio. The company designed a 7cm x 9cm presenter around the smart badge concept, which combines low-power embedded processing, wireless, touch and sensor technology to create a turnkey system. By leveraging industry-leading Atmel technology, this complete system solution makes it easy to demonstrate almost any type of wearable application.
The demonstrator integrates Atmel's and partner's hardware and software technologies into a highly optimized and comprehensive ready-to-use solution that meets the complex needs of the wearable market while quickly bringing its design to market. Users can wear it around their neck and display different applications (compass, watch, spirit level, slide, battery fuel gauge) specially made for Atriod operating system (OS) by Atmel partner Adeneo Embedded. The presenter is based on Atmel's embedded connectivity and can interact with other Android phones.
The badge uses Precision Design Associates' (PDA Inc.) 3.5-inch display, embedded with Bosch Sensortec's MEMS and sensor technology, and Micron's memory multi-chip package, combining 4Gb LPDDR2 + 4GB eMMC in a single package demo On Android KitKat OS. Atmel is also developing a software framework that will allow various software partners to plug in their software and collaborate seamlessly.
According to the latest forecast data of IDC's global quarterly wearable device trackers, the total shipments of suppliers in 2015 were 45.7 million units, an increase of 133.4% from 19.6 million units in 2014. By 2019, total shipments are expected to reach 126.1 million units, with a five-year compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of approximately 45.1%.
As the wearable market is expected to grow, designers are looking for solutions that combine all necessary and complex technologies into a simple turnkey solution, so that designers can focus on differentiated products.
