STMicro STM32C0 Series: High-Efficiency MCUs with Performance Boost

publier sur octobre 18, 2024

Developers now have access to enhanced storage and advanced functionalities with the STM32C0 microcontroller (MCU), enabling more sophisticated capabilities in resource-constrained and cost-sensitive embedded applications.

The STM32C071 MCU features up to 128KB of flash memory and 24KB of RAM, along with a new USB device controller that does not require an external crystal oscillator, supporting TouchGFX graphic software. The on-chip USB controller allows designers to save at least one external clock and four decoupling capacitors, reducing bill of materials costs and simplifying PCB component layouts. Additionally, the new product features a pair of power lines, aiding in PCB design simplification. This allows for thinner, cleaner, and more competitive product designs.

Built on the Arm® Cortex®-M0+ core, the STM32C0 MCU can replace traditional 8-bit or 16-bit MCUs in household appliances, simple industrial controllers, power tools, and Internet of Things devices. As a cost-effective option in the 32-bit MCU market, the STM32C0 offers higher processing performance, greater storage capacity, and improved peripheral integration—ideal for user interface control and other basic functionalities such as control, timing, computation, and communication.

Moreover, developers can accelerate application development for the STM32C0 MCU with the robust STM32 ecosystem, which provides a variety of development tools, software packages, and evaluation boards. Developers can also join the STM32 user community to share and exchange experiences. Scalability is another highlight of the new product; the STM32C0 series shares many commonalities with the higher-performance STM32G0 MCU, including the Cortex-M0+ core, peripheral IP cores, and optimized pin configurations with compact I/O ratios.

Patrick Aidoune, General Manager of the General MCU Product Division at STMicroelectronics, stated, "We have positioned the STM32C0 series as an economical entry point for 32-bit embedded computing applications. The STM32C071 series offers greater on-chip storage capacity and a USB device controller, providing developers with increased design flexibility for upgrading existing applications and developing new products. Additionally, the new MCU fully supports the TouchGFX GUI software, making it easier to enhance user experiences with graphics, animations, colors, and touch capabilities."

Two customers of the STM32C071, Dongguan Display Technology (TSD) from China and Riverdi from Poland, have completed their first projects using the new STM32C071 MCU. Both companies are authorized partners of ST.

TSD has chosen the STM32C071 to control a complete module for a 240x240 resolution knob display, which includes a 1.28-inch circular LCD screen and position encoding electronic components. Roger L.J., Chief Operating Officer of TSD, stated, "This MCU offers great value for money and is easy for developers to use, allowing us to provide a competitively priced, transformative product for the home appliance, smart home, automotive control, beauty device, and industrial control markets."

Kamil Kozłowski, Co-CEO of Riverdi, introduced the company's 1.54-inch LCD display module, which boasts high clarity, brightness, and extremely low power consumption. "The simplicity and cost-effectiveness of the STM32C071 enable customers to easily integrate the display module into their projects. This module can connect directly to the STM32 NUCLEO-C071RB development board, leveraging the powerful ecosystem to create a TouchGFX graphical demonstration project."

The STM32C071 MCU is now in production. STMicroelectronics' long-term supply plan ensures availability for the STM32C0 MCU for ten years from the date of purchase, supporting ongoing production and field maintenance needs.
